What is
duckweed?

IMG_0528_edited.jpg

Duckweed is a fascinating little aquatic plant. It has a very high nutritional value. It has the same amount of protein (by fresh weight) as mushrooms and is also considered a "complete protein" containing all 9 essential amino acids the human body needs. It is rich in vitamins, in particular Vitamin D. There are sources suggesting its rich in Vitamin B-12 however more research is needed to confirm. Duckweed is also rich in antioxidants, in particular antioxidants that support vision. Duckweed has no known allergens and our species is non-GMO.

But wait, there's more! Duckweed reproduces by cloning itself; and can do so rather fast under optimal conditions - which I've gotten dialed in. Duckweed requires no farmland to be produced. It doesn't need soil at all. It grows entirely in shallow water, meaning it can be grown anywhere. Furthermore, duckweed is happy with heat. It grows best between 75 and 80F, which is good news considering large regions of the planet are getting warmer. Lastly, duckweed is not seasonal. It can be grown and harvested 52 weeks a year.
